water carving

with Ryan McKerley

This Summer we will be hosting a Water Carving workshop taught by Ryan McKerley! Ryan is an Austin based ceramic artist who makes beautiful soda-fired, water etched vessels. He is a nationally recognized artist and teacher and we are so excited to welcome him to our studio. (Scroll down to see some examples of his work!)

In this workshop we will use various materials to create low relief and high relief patterns, shapes and images on bone dry porcelain. Each participant will be provided with two pieces each, made by Ryan himself: a tile, a cup or a bowl for practicing the water carving technique. We will not be making any pottery from scratch in this workshop: This will solely be a surface decoration focused class.

This workshop is beginner friendly! You do not need any prior ceramics experience to sign up.

Materials Provided:
•hot wax/melted paraffin

Participants can bring their own bone dry pots, tiles or sculptures for water carving. The water carving process works best on smooth clays like porcelain or B-mix. Thin walled vessels and sculptures tend to crack, so thick and sturdy objects are best for this workshop.

Please bring:
•X-Acto Knife
•Your favorite paintbrush
•Scissors
•(Optional) Bone dry pottery or sculpture or tiles

At the conclusion of this workshop, your pieces will be carefully glazed and fired in the kiln by us. Finished pieces will be ready to pick up in roughly 6 weeks.

Four Circle Studio Member pricing includes firing (the workshop pieces will not count towards your monthly kiln firing allotment) but does not include glazing.
