schedule
Saturday
11-11:45am Glazing
11:45am-12:30pm Loading Raku Kiln
Sunday
11am-12:30pm Unloading Kiln (The fun part: Fire!)
We will start with a glazing class where you will glaze your piece with our special raku glazes. After glazing, everyone will take turns loading your pieces into the raku kiln in the kiln yard.
When you arrive Sunday the kiln will be nearing the end of the firing- So this is the exciting part! We will fill various metal trash cans with combustible materials (shredded paper, sawdust, leaves, coffee grounds, etc). We’ll unload the pieces at peak temperature (around 1800 degrees F) and toss each of them into the trash cans, in which the combustibles will ignite and create a gorgeous surface on the clay. Once this part of the process is over, the pieces will need to cool for around 45 minutes to an hour before they can be retrieved.
